Lorenzo de’ Medici(Italian pronunciation: [loˈrɛntso de ˈmɛːditʃi], 1 January 1449 – 8 April 1492)^[1] was an Italian statesman, de facto ruler of the Florentine Republicand the most powerful and enthusiastic patron of Renaissance culture in Italy.^[2][3][4] Also known as Lorenzo the Magnificent(Lorenzo il Magnifico[loˈrɛntso il maɲˈɲiːfiko]) by contemporary Florentines, he was a magnate, diplomat, politician and patron of scholars, artists and poets. As a patron, he is best known for his sponsorship of artists such as Botticelli and Michelangelo. He held the balance of power within the Italic League, an alliance of states that stabilized political conditions on the Italian peninsula for decades, and his life coincided with the mature phase of the Italian Renaissanceand the Golden Age of Florence.^[5] The Peace of Lodi of 1454 that he helped maintain among the various Italian states collapsed with his death. He is buried in the Medici Chapel in Florence.

 

Youth

Lorenzo’s grandfather, Cosimo de’ Medici, was the first member of the Medici family to lead the Republic of Florence and run the Medici Banksimultaneously. As one of the wealthiest men in Europe, Cosimo spent a very large portion of his fortune on government and philanthropy, for example as a patron of the arts and financier of public works.^[6]Lorenzo’s father, Piero di Cosimo de’ Medici, was equally at the centre of Florentine civic life, chiefly as an art patron and collector, while Lorenzo’s uncle, Giovanni di Cosimo de’ Medici, took care of the family’s business interests. Lorenzo’s mother, Lucrezia Tornabuoni, was a writer of sonnets and a friend to poets and philosophers of the Medici Academy.^[7] She became her son’s advisor after the deaths of his father and uncle.^[6]

Lorenzo, considered the most promising of the five children of Piero and Lucrezia, was tutored by a diplomat and bishop, Gentile de’ Becchi, and the humanist philosopher Marsilio Ficino,^[8] and he was trained in Greek by John Argyropoulos.^[9] With his brother Giuliano, he participated in jousting, hawking, hunting, and horse breeding for the Palio, a horse race in Siena. In 1469, aged 19, he won first prize in a jousting tournament sponsored by the Medici. The joust was the subject of a poem written by Luigi Pulci.^[10] Niccolò Machiavelli also wrote of the occasion, perhaps sarcastically, that he won « not by way of favour, but by his own valour and skill in arms ».^[11] He carried a banner painted by Verrocchio, and his horse was named Morello di Vento.^[12][13]

Piero sent Lorenzo on many important diplomatic missions when he was still a youth, including trips to Rome to meet the pope and other important religious and political figures.^[14]

Lorenzo was described as rather plain of appearance and of average height, having a broad frame and short legs, dark hair and eyes, a squashed nose, short-sighted eyes and a harsh voice. Giuliano, on the other hand, was regarded as handsome and a « golden boy », and was used as a model by Botticelli in his painting of Mars and Venus.^[15]Even Lorenzo’s close friend Niccolo Valori described him as homely, saying, « nature had been a step mother to him in regards to his personal appearance, although she had acted as a loving mother in all things concocted with the mind. His complexion was dark, and although his face was not handsome it was so full of dignity as to compel respect. »^[16]

Politics

Lorenzo, groomed for power, assumed a leading role in the state upon the death of his father in 1469, when he was twenty. Already drained by his grandfather’s building projects and constantly stressed by mismanagement, wars, and political expenses, the assets of the Medici Bank contracted seriously during the course of Lorenzo’s lifetime.^[17]

Lorenzo, like his grandfather, father, and son, ruled Florence indirectly through surrogates in the city councils by means of threats, payoffs and strategic marriages.^[18]He effectively reigned as a despot, and ordinary citizens had little political freedom.^[19] Rival Florentine families inevitably harboured resentments over the Medicis’ dominance, and enemies of the Medici remained a factor in Florentine life long after Lorenzo’s passing.^[18]The most notable of the rival families was the Pazzi, who nearly brought Lorenzo’s reign to an end.^[20]

On Easter Sunday, 26 April 1478, in an incident known as the Pazzi conspiracy, a group headed by Girolamo Riario, Francesco de’ Pazzi, and Francesco Salviati (the archbishop of Pisa), attacked Lorenzo and his brother and co-ruler Giuliano in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in an attempt to seize control of the Florentine government.^[21]Shockingly, Salviati acted with the blessing of his patron Pope Sixtus IV. Giuliano was killed, brutally stabbed to death, but Lorenzo escaped with only a minor wound to the shoulder, having been defended by the poet Poliziano.^[22] News of the conspiracy spread throughout Florence and was brutally put down by the populace through such measures as the lynching of the archbishop of Pisa and members of the Pazzi family who were involved in the conspiracy.^[20]

In the aftermath of the Pazzi conspiracy and the punishment of supporters of Pope Sixtus IV, the Medici and Florence earned the wrath of the Holy See, which seized all the Medici assets that Sixtus could find, excommunicated Lorenzo and the entire government of Florence, and ultimately put the entire Florentine city-state under interdict.^[23] When these moves had little effect, Sixtus formed a military alliance with King Ferdinand I of Naples, whose son, Alfonso, Duke of Calabria, led an invasion of the Florentine Republic, still ruled by Lorenzo.^[24]

Lorenzo rallied the citizens. However, with little support from the traditional Medici allies in Bologna and Milan,^[20] the war dragged on, and only diplomacy by Lorenzo, who personally traveled to Naples and became a prisoner of the king for several months, ultimately resolved the crisis. That success enabled Lorenzo to secure constitutional changes within the government of the Florentine Republic that further enhanced his own power.^[18]

Thereafter, Lorenzo, like his grandfather Cosimo de’ Medici, pursued a policy of maintaining peace, balancing power between the northern Italian states and keeping major European states such as France and the Holy Roman Empire out of Italy. Lorenzo maintained good relations with Sultan Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire, as the Florentine maritime trade with the Ottomans was a major source of wealth for the Medici.^[25]

Efforts to acquire revenue from the mining of alum in Tuscany unfortunately marred Lorenzo’s reputation. Alum had been discovered by local citizens of Volterra, who turned to Florence to get backing to exploit this important natural resource. A key commodity in the glass-making, tanning and textile industries, alum was available from only a few sources under the control of the Ottomans and monopolized by Genoa before the discovery of alum sources in Italy at Tolfa. First the Roman Curia in 1462, and then Lorenzo and the Medici Bank less than a year later, got involved in backing the mining operation, with the pope taking a two-ducat commission for each cantar quintal of alum retrieved and ensuring a monopoly against the Turkish-derived goods by prohibiting trade in alum with infidels.^[26] When they realized the value of the alum mine, the people of Volterra wanted its revenues for their municipal funds rather than having it enter the pockets of their Florentine backers. Thus began an insurrection and secession from Florence, which involved putting to death several opposing citizens. Lorenzo sent mercenaries to suppress the revolt by force, and the mercenaries ultimately sacked the city. Lorenzo hurried to Volterra to make amends, but the incident would remain a dark stain on his record.^[27][28]

Patronage

Lorenzo’s court included artists such as Piero and Antonio del Pollaiuolo, Andrea del Verrocchio, Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Michelangelo Buonarroti, who were instrumental in achieving the 15th-century Renaissance. Although Lorenzo did not commission many works himself, he helped these artists to secure commissions from other patrons. Michelangelo lived with Lorenzo and his family for three years, dining at the family table and participating in discussions led by Marsilio Ficino.

Lorenzo himself was an artist and wrote poetry in his native Tuscan. In his poetry, he celebrates life while acknowledging with melancholy the fragility and instability of the human condition, particularly in his later works. Love, feasts and light dominate his verse.^[29]

Cosimo had started the collection of books that became the Medici Library (also called the Laurentian Library), and Lorenzo expanded it. Lorenzo’s agents retrieved from the East large numbers of classical works, and he employed a large workshop to copy his books and disseminate their content across Europe. He supported the development of humanism through his circle of scholarly friends, including the philosophers Marsilio Ficino, Poliziano and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola.^[30] They studied Greek philosophers and attempted to merge the ideas of Plato with Christianity.

Apart from a personal interest, Lorenzo also used the Florentine milieuof fine arts for his diplomatic efforts. An example includes the commission of Ghirlandaio, Botticelli, Pietro Perugino and Cosimo Rosselli from Rome to paint murals in the Sistine Chapel, a move that has been interpreted as sealing the alliance between Lorenzo and Pope Sixtus IV.^[30]

In 1471, Lorenzo calculated that his family had spent some 663,000 florins (about US$460 million today) on charity, buildings and taxes since 1434. He wrote,

« I do not regret this for though many would consider it better to have a part of that sum in their purse, I consider it to have been a great honour to our state, and I think the money was well-expended and I am well-pleased. »^[31]

Marriage and children

Lorenzo married Clarice Orsini by proxy on 7 February 1469. The marriage in person took place in Florence on 4 June 1469. She was a daughter of Giacomo Orsini, Lord of Monterotondo and Bracciano by his wife and cousin Maddalena Orsini. Clarice and Lorenzo had 10 children, all except Contessina Antonia born in Florence:

• Lucrezia Maria Romola de’ Medici(1470–1553), who married Jacopo Salviati on 10 September 1486 and had 10 children of her own, including Cardinal Giovanni Salviati, Cardinal Bernardo Salviati, Maria Salviati (mother of Cosimo I de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany), and Francesca Salviati (mother of Pope Leo XI)
• Twins who died after birth (March 1471)
• Piero di Lorenzo de’ Medici (1472–1503), called « the Unfortunate », was ruler of Florence after his father’s death
• Maria Maddalena Romola de’ Medici (1473–1528) married Franceschetto Cybo (illegitimate son of Pope Innocent VIII) on 25 February 1487 and had seven children

Lorenzo also adopted his nephew Giulio, the illegitimate son of his slain brother Giuliano. Giulio later became Pope Clement VII.

Later years, death, and legacy

During Lorenzo’s tenure, several branches of the family bank collapsed because of bad loans, and in later years he got into financial difficulties and resorted to misappropriating trust and state funds.

Toward the end of Lorenzo’s life, Florence came under the spell of Savonarola, who believed Christians had strayed too far into Greco-Roman culture. Lorenzo played a role in bringing Savonarola to Florence.^[34]

Lorenzo died during the late night of 8 April, at the longtime family villa of Careggi. Savonarola visited Lorenzo on his death bed. The rumour that Savonarola damned Lorenzo on his deathbed has been refuted in Roberto Ridolfi‘s book, Vita di Girolamo Savonarola. Letters written by witnesses to Lorenzo’s death report that he died peacefully after listening to the Gospel of the day. Many signs and portents were claimed to have taken place at the moment of his death, including the dome of Florence Cathedral being struck by lightning, ghosts appearing, and the lions kept at Via Leone fighting one another.^[35]

The Signoria and councils of Florence issued a decree:

« Whereas the foremost man of all this city, the lately deceased Lorenzo de’ Medici, did, during his whole life, neglect no opportunity of protecting, increasing, adorning and raising this city, but was always ready with counsel, authority and painstaking, in thought and deed; shrank from neither trouble nor danger for the good of the state and its freedom….. it has seemed good to the Senate and people of Florence…. to establish a public testimonial of gratitude to the memory of such a man, in order that virtue might not be unhonoured among Florentines, and that, in days to come, other citizens may be incited to serve the commonwealth with might and wisdom. »^[36]

Lorenzo was buried with his brother Giuliano in the Church of San Lorenzo in the red porphyry sarcophagus designed for Piero and Giovanni de’ Medici, not, as might be expected, in the New Sacristy, designed by Michelangelo. The latter holds the two monumental tombs of Lorenzo and Giuliano’s less known namesakes: Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino, and Giuliano, Duke of Nemours.^[37] According to Williamson and others, the statues of the lesser Lorenzo and Giuliano were carved by Michelangelo to incorporate the essence of the famous men. In 1559, the bodies of Lorenzo de’ Medici (« the Magnificent ») and his brother Giuliano were interred in the New Sacristy in an unmarked tomb beneath Michelangelo’s statue of the Madonna.^[37]

Lorenzo’s heir was his eldest son, Piero di Lorenzo de’ Medici, known as « Piero the Unfortunate ». In 1494, he squandered his father’s patrimony and brought down the Medici dynasty in Florence. His second son, Giovanni, who became Pope Leo X, retook the city in 1512 with the aid of a Spanish army.^[38] In 1529, Lorenzo’s nephew Giulio – whom Lorenzo had raised as his own son and then reigned as Pope Clement VII – formalized Medici rule of Florence by installing Alessandro de’ Medici as the city’s first hereditary duke.^[39]

La Calomnie ou la Calomnie d’Apelle (en italien : La Calunnia di Apelle) est un tableau de Sandro Botticellipeint aux alentours de 1495pour Antonio Segni, un banquier florentin. Cette œuvre d’art, réservée à un public d’esthètes initiés lors de sa conception, est conservée à Florence, dans la Galerie des Offices.

Cette peinture dont le sujet est la calomnie, est une allégorie. Les allusions mythologiques sont nombreuses : sur les frises dorées, sur les statues antiques, et bien sûr, par les personnages eux-mêmes. Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait croire le personnage ici calomnié n’est pas Apelle de Cos (le peintre grec auteur de La Calomnie) mais est comme tous les autres personnages une allégorie.

Analyse du tableau

Son titre provient de la description d’un tableau d’Apelle de Cos qui a vécu au iv^e siècle av. J.-C. qui est perdu mais dont il subsiste une description faite par Lucien de Samosate¹.

La peinture comprend neuf figures allégoriques parmi les personnages de l’avant-scène. Leur identification reste du domaine de l’interprétation, les allégories étant toutes des abstractions personnifiées renvoyant à des idées.

Évolution de la Vénus de Botticelli

Apelle, peintre de l’Antiquité, attira Sandro Botticelli par ses œuvres sur le thème de la Vénus sortie des eaux, étudié énormément par le peintre de la Renaissance. On retrouve d’ailleurs Vénus en tant que personnage le plus à gauche de la Calomnie, sous la forme de la Vérité nue, invoquant le jugement du Ciel par son doigt levé.

Botticelli en vient donc à conter un épisode supposé de la vie d’Apelle, l’histoire d’un rejet de la part de ses pairs. Il est fortement probable que le message qu’il voulut donner s’adressait à ses contemporains, et s’appliquait à son époque.

Illustrant cette dureté, la Vénus a perdu ses formes et belles rondeurs dont Sandro l’avait dotée lors de sa naissance. Cette évolution, peut-être indépendante du reste du tableau, est vraisemblablement le résultat de l’influence de Savonarole sur le peintre, qui alla jusque mettre au pilori certaines peintures de sa période précédente pour mieux se mettre en accord avec ses nouveaux crédos.

Simonetta Vespucci(née Cattaneo; 1453 – 26 April 1476), nicknamed la bella Simonetta, was an Italian noblewoman from Genoa, the wife of Marco Vespucci of Florence and the cousin-in-law of Amerigo Vespucci. According to her legend, before her death at 22 she was famous as the greatest beauty of her age in North Italy, and the model for many paintings (many not showing similar features at all) by Botticelli and other Florentine painters. Many art historians are infuriated by these attributions, which the Victorian critic John Ruskin is blamed for giving some respectability.^[1]

Biography

Early life and marriage

She was born as Simonetta Cattaneo circa 1453 in a part of the Republic of Genoa that is now in the Italian region of Liguria.^[2] A more precise location for her birthplace is unknown: possibly the city of Genoa,^[3] or perhaps either Portovenere or Fezzano.^[4] The Florentine poet Politian wrote that her home was « in that stern Ligurian district up above the seacoast, where angry Neptune beats against the rocks … There, like Venus, she was born among the waves. »^[5][6] Her father was a Genoese nobleman named Gaspare Cattaneo della Volta (a much-older relative of a sixteenth-century Doge of Genoa named Leonardo Cattaneo della Volta) and her mother was Gaspare’s wife, Cattocchia Spinola (another source names her parents slightly differently as Gaspare Cattaneo and Chateroccia di Marco Spinola.^[7]

At age fifteen or sixteen she married Marco Vespucci, son of Piero, who was a distant cousin of the explorer and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. They met in April 1469; she was with her parents at the church of San Torpete when she met Marco; the doge Piero il Fregoso and much of the Genoese nobility were present.

Marco had been sent to Genoa by his father, Piero, to study at the Banco di San Giorgio. Marco was accepted by Simonetta’s father, and he was very much in love with her, so the marriage was logical. Her parents also knew the marriage would be advantageous because Marco’s family was well connected in Florence, especially to the Medici family.

Florence

Simonetta and Marco were married in Florence. According to her legend, Simonetta was instantly popular at the Florentine court. The Medici brothers, Lorenzo and Giuliano took an instant liking toward her. Lorenzo permitted the Vespucci wedding to be held at the palazzoin Via Larga, and held the wedding reception at their lavish Villa di Careggi. Simonetta, upon arriving in Florence, was discovered by Sandro Botticelli and other prominent painters through the Vespucci family. Before long she had supposedly attracted the brothers Lorenzo and Giuliano of the ruling Medici family. Lorenzo was occupied with affairs of state, but his younger brother was free to pursue her.

At La Giostra (a jousting tournament) in 1475, held at the Piazza Santa Croce, Giuliano entered the lists bearing a banner on which was a picture of Simonetta as a helmeted Pallas Athene painted by Botticelli, beneath which was the French inscription La Sans Pareille, meaning « The unparalleled one ».^{[8][9][7][10]} It is clear that Simonetta had a reputation as an exceptional beauty in Florence,^[11] but the whole display should be considered within the conventions of courtly love; Simonetta was a married woman,^[8][9] a member of a powerful family allied to the Medici,^[11] and any actual affair would have been a huge political risk.

Giuliano won the tournament,^[8] and Simonetta was nominated “The Queen of Beauty” at that event. It is unknown, and unlikely, that they actually became lovers.

Death

Simonetta Vespucci died just one year later, presumably from tuberculosis, on the night of 26–27 April 1476. She was twenty-two at the time of her death. She was carried through the city in an open coffin for all to admire her beauty, and there seems to have been some kind of posthumous popular cult in Florence.^[11] Her husband remarried soon afterward, and Giuliano de Medici was assassinated in the Pazzi conspiracy in 1478, two years to the day after her death.

Botticelli finished painting The Birth of Venus around 1486, some ten years later. Some have claimed that Venus, in this painting, closely resembles Simonetta.^[12] This claim, however, is dismissed as a « romantic myth » by Ernst Gombrich,^[11] and « romantic nonsense » by historian Felipe Fernández-Armesto:

The vulgar assumption, for instance, that she was Botticelli’s model for all his famous beauties seems to be based on no better grounds than the feeling that the most beautiful woman of the day ought to have modelled for the most sensitive painter.^[13]

Some, including Ruskin, suggest that Botticelli also had fallen in love with her, a view supported by his request to be buried in the Church of Ognissanti – the parish church of the Vespucci – in Florence. His wish was carried out when he died some 34 years later, in 1510. However this had been Botticelli’s parish church since he was baptized there, and he was buried with his family. The church contained works by him.

There are some connections between Simonetta and Botticelli. He painted the standard carried by Giuliano at the joust in 1475, which carried an image of Pallas Athene that was very probably modelled on her; so he does seem to have painted her once at least, though the image is now lost.^[7][10] Botticelli’s main Medici patron, Giuliano’s younger cousin Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici, married Simonetta’s niece Semiramide in 1482, and it is often thought that his Primavera was painted as a wedding gift on this occasion.^[14][15][16]

Regarding each Portrait of a Woman pictured above that is credited to the workshop of Sandro Botticelli, Ronald Lightbown claims they were creations of Botticelli’s workshop that were likely neither drawn nor painted exclusively by Botticelli himself. Regarding these same two paintings he also claims « [Botticell’s work]shop…executed portraits of ninfe, or fair ladies…all probably fancy portraits of ideal beauties, rather than real ladies. »^[18]

She may be depicted in the painting by Piero di Cosimo titled Portrait of a woman, said to be of Simonetta Vespucci that portrays a woman as Cleopatra with an asp around her neck and is alternatively titled by some individuals Portrait of Simonetta Vespucci. Yet how closely this resembles the living woman is uncertain, partly because if this is indeed a rendering of her form and spirit it is a posthumous portrait created about fourteen years after her death. Worth noting as well is the fact that Piero di Cosimo was only fourteen years old in the year of Vespucci’s death. The museum that currently houses this painting questions the very identity of its subject by titling it « Portrait of a woman, said to be of Simonetta Vespucci », and stating that the inscription of her name at the bottom of the painting may have been added at a later date.^[19]

Le Philadelphia Museum of Art (« musée des beaux-arts de Philadelphie ») est le plus grand musée d’art de Philadelphie.

Le David est un chef-d’œuvre de la sculpture de la Renaissance, réalisé par Michel-Ange entre 1501 et 1504. Il mesure 4,34 mètres de hauteur (5,14 mètres avec le socle) et il est tiré d’un bloc de marbre blanc de Carrare, laissé à l’abandon après l’échec d’autres sculpteurs. Michel-Ange a su tirer parti de l’étroitesse du bloc de marbre et contourner un de ses défauts (une brèche dans laquelle il a creusé l’espace entre le bras droit et le torse). Michel-Ange a représenté David, une fronde (lanière de cuir servant de lance pierre) à la main, juste avant son combat contre le géant Goliath.

Initialement placé devant le palazzo Vecchio pour symboliser la détermination d’une jeune république face au tyran, l’original est, depuis 1873, exposé dans la Galleria dell’Accademia de Florence. Le David que l’on peut voir devant la façade du Palazzo Vecchio n’est qu’une réplique installée là en 1910.

Histoire

Avant Michel-Ange

En 1463, une commande est faite à Agostino di Duccio pour sculpter la figure géante d’un prophète qui prendrait sa place dans une des niches de la tribune nord à l’extérieur de la cathédrale Santa Maria del Fiore de Florence, aux côtés des deux prophètes réalisés par Nanni di Banco (Isaïe) et Donatello (Josué)¹. Elle devait être le pendant de la statue de Josué conçue par Donatello cinquante ans plus tôt. Duccio a extrait et dégrossi un bloc de marbre des carrières de Carrare, mais il abandonne au bout de trois ans devant l’ampleur de la tâche. Dix ans plus tard, Antonio Rossellino entreprend d’achever son travail, puis renonce à son tour². C’est que le bloc de marbre « n’était pas assez compact, il présentait beaucoup de veinures, et par-dessus tout il était très étroit ; il convenait mieux aux sculptures gothiques qu’à celles, musculeuses et massives de la Renaissance »³. Le bloc reste ainsi quarante ans dans l’atelier de la cathédrale, à moitié travaillé¹.

Le 2 juillet 1501, les responsables de l’Opera del Duomo (le conseil de fabrique, chargé de superviser la construction et l’aménagement de la cathédrale Santa Maria del Fiore) se réunissent pour décider du sort du bloc de marbre. On apprend dans leur délibération que celui-ci, « mal dégrossi » (male abrozarotum) gisait « sur le dos » dans une cour de l’Opera del Duomo. Ils prennent la décision, d’abord de le redresser, et ensuite de désigner un sculpteur capable de l’achever⁴. Bien qu’Andrea Sansovino se soit montré intéressé⁵, c’est Michel-Ange qui reçoit la commande du David, le 16 août 1501, de l’Opera del Duomo, et de l’Arte della Lana(la plus importante maison de commerce et de banque de Florence au xiv^e siècle, liée aux tisserands). Il érige une structure en bois autour du bloc pour le cacher et travaille ainsi jusqu’au 23 juin 1503 (fête de la saint Jean-Baptiste, patron de Florence), jour où la statue est dévoilée⁶.

Cependant, l’emplacement initialement prévu, au sommet de l’un des piliers du Dôme de Florence, n’était plus envisageable, « ne serait-ce que pour des raisons techniques et statiques, eu égard aux dimensions gigantesques de l’œuvre, et qu’en outre, la nudité du personnage paraîtrait peut-être déplacée en pareil lieu⁷. »

Le 25 janvier 1504, une commission composée des plus grands artistes florentins (entre autres, Léonard de Vinci, Piero di Cosimo, Simone Pollaiuolo, Filippino Lippi, Cosimo Rosselli, Sandro Botticelli, Giuliano et Antonio da Sangallo, le Pérugin et Lorenzo di Credi) est chargée de déterminer l’emplacement du David de Michel-Ange. Léonard de Vinci et Giulano da Sangallo se prononcent pour l’intérieur de la Loggia dei Lanzi, mais on décide finalement, devant l’insistance de Michel-Ange⁸, de l’installer devant le Palazzo Vecchio⁹. Sa statue prend ainsi la place de la Judith et Holopherne de Donatello, qui rejoint, elle, l’intérieur du Palais.

Le David quitte, le 14 mai 1504, de nuit, car il avait de nombreux détracteurs¹⁰, l’atelier de Michel-Ange à Santa Maria del Fiore pour rejoindre le Palazzo Vecchio. Au bout de quatre jours, la statue atteint la place et il faut encore attendre juin 1504 pour qu’elle soit correctement installée sur l’ancien socle de la Judith. Elle est inaugurée officiellement le 8 septembre 1504¹¹.

Depuis la mort de Savonarole en 1498, Florence connaissait une parenthèse républicaine. Le nouveau gonfalonier, Piero Soderini, voit donc dans le David l’exaltation des valeurs républicaines. La statue devient le symbole de Florence, cette Cité-État menacée de tous les côtés par des états rivaux puissants, cette interprétation étant renforcée par son emplacement devant le Palazzo Vecchio, siège municipal de Florence.

Le 26 avril 1527, le peuple florentin s’empare du Palazzo Vecchio, contraignant la Seigneurie à déclarer les Médicis rebelles. Ceux-ci rassemblent cinq mille soldats qui investissent la Piazza della Signoria. Les assiégés se défendent en lançant divers projectiles sur les troupes des Médicis. L’un d’eux atteint le David de Michel-Ange, brisant son bras gauche en trois morceaux. Vasari, accompagné de son ami Francesco Salviati, les auraient récupérés. En 1543, sur ordre de Cosme de Médicis, le bras gauche de la statue est restauré.

On prend conscience, dès le début du xix^e siècle, de l’état de dégradation du David, causé par son exposition en plein air. Entre 1808 et 1815, des restaurateurs croient le protéger en le traitant à l’encaustique. Trente ans plus tard, en 1843, Aristodemo Costoli constate les dommages ainsi créés. Malheureusement, le remède est pire que le mal : il nettoie la statue avec une solution composée à 50 % d’acide chlorhydrique, détruisant ainsi la patine d’origine de la statue.

Une commission décide en 1866 que le Davidtrouverait désormais refuge derrière les murs de la Galleria dell’Accademia. Il faut cinq jours, du 31 juillet au 4 août 1873, pour déplacer la statue de la Piazza della Signoria à l’Accademia, sur un chariot spécialement conçu pour l’occasion par les ingénieurs Porra et Poggi. Une copie est ensuite placée devant la façade d’entrée du Palazzo Vecchio.

Analyse

L’adolescent qu’a sculpté Michel-Ange est un athlète puissant, « magnification du nu viril¹² », là où l’on avait vu dans le David de Donatello, sculpté soixante ans plus tôt, « un héros androgyne à la beauté d’éphèbe¹³. » Le David de Donatello et celui de Verrocchio montrent le jeune héros exhibant le glaive avec lequel il vient de trancher la tête de Goliath, et foulant celle-ci à ses pieds. Michel-Ange, lui, a choisi de représenter David avant le combat, au moment où il défie le géant Goliath. Son attitude, un contrappostonerveux (le poids du corps repose sur une seule jambe et la ligne des hanches fait opposition à celle des épaules), trahit une « violence contenue¹⁴ ». Il s’apprête à lancer, avec sa fronde (dont la courroie passe au-dessus de son épaule et le long de son dos), la pierre qui va frapper au front son ennemi.

La statue de Michel-Ange devint l’incarnation de la virtus fiorentina, la vertu républicaine florentine, au sens où l’entendait Leonardo Bruni¹⁵, lorsqu’il écrivait que « les vertus ancestrales des Romains et des Étrusques avaient été préservées dans les lois sacrées de Florence. » Du reste, le David fut lui-même comparé aux modèles de l’Antiquité. Pourtant, sur le moment, des citoyens florentins avaient reproché à la Seigneurie d’avoir déplacé la Judith de Donatello, qui leur semblait être le vrai symbole de la République¹⁶.

Style

Dans le droit fil de l’esthétique de l’inachevé (non finito)¹⁷, propre à Michel-Ange, le sommet de la tête montrerait un peu de la surface initiale du bloc avec une lézarde, non travaillée. De même Michel-Ange utilise de la disproportion dans les mains.

Alors que le David médiéval est écrivain et musicien, dessiné barbu, c’est à la Renaissance qu’il est représenté juvénile et orgueilleux, d’abord entre 1430 et 1440 par Donatello avec une statue en bronze de 1,58 mètres de haut. Andrea del Verrocchio réalise autour de 1476 une autre statue en bronze (1,25 mètres), enfantine et presque androgyne, avec la tête de Goliath à ses pieds¹⁸.

The Pietà for Vittoria Colonna is a black chalk drawing on cardboard (28.9×18.9 cm) by Michelangelo Buonarroti, dated to about 1538–44 and kept at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.^[1]

History

Michelangelo became acquainted with Vittoria Colonna around 1538.^[2] Their lively friendship gained Michelangelo admission to her social circles, and he became acquainted with issues of church reform. For Colonna, Michelangelo executed several paintings in the fifth decade of the sixteenth century. All of them are now lost or of controversial attribution, but several sketches and copies by students and admirers of Michelangelo have been preserved.

Apart from a famous Crucifixion, Michelangelo’s most notable work for Vittoria Colonna is a Pietà, of which a remarkable drawing is exhibited at Boston. It is not certain that this work was painted by Michelangelo, but it is described by Ascanio Condivi. It has at any rate proved influential: There are several copies by students of lesser skill in Florence and Rome, a reworking by Ludovico Buti and an adaptation by Lavinia Fontana.^[1]

In 2007, the Milanese restaurator and art historian Antonio Forcellino announced that an oil painting of the same subject had been discovered in a private home in Rochester, New York. The painting had come to the U.S. in 1883 and had hung over the fireplace of a middle-class family home until the 1970s. In a 2011 book, The Lost Michelangelos, Forcellino expresses the opinion that the painting is Michelangelo’s. This attribution is not yet widely shared. According to Kristina Herrmann Fiore, a curator at the Borghese Gallery in Rome, the painting’s underdrawing is conceivably by the hand of Michelangelo, whereas Alexander Nagel, a professor at New York University Institute of Fine Arts believes that the painting is merely a copy of a composition by Michelangelo.^[3]

Description and style

The theme of the Pietà, so dear to the sculptor Michelangelo, is addressed in a highly emotional composition, as in the Crucifixion for Colonna. The dead Jesus is cradled between the grieving Mary’s legs, who raises her arms to heaven as two angels also raise Christ’s arms at right angles. Mary’s gesture balances the forceful vertical lines of Jesus’ body, which lies on a rock. Above the two stands a beam, the Cross, on which is inscribed, vertically, a quotation by Dante: Non vi si pensa quanto sangue costa – « There they don’t think of how much blood it costs ».^[1]

In this verse from canto 29 of the Paradiso, Beatrice deplores the lack of appreciation for the martyrs‘ sacrifices. The quote reflects Michelangelo’s and Colonna’s religious convictions. Both belonged to Roman groups that focused on achieving salvation by faith through prayerful contemplation of sacred history, as does their poetry of this period. « Michelangelo’s gift », according to James M. Saslow, « thus offered consoling testimony to their shared conviction that the savior’s tragic death is also a cause for joy, the climax of God’s divine comedy that offers each believing soul the hope of a happy ending. »^[1]

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (called Fenway Courtduring Isabella Stewart Gardner‘s lifetime) is a museum in the Fenway–Kenmore neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts near the Back Bay Fens. It houses an art collection of world importance, including significant examples of European, Asian, and American art, from paintings and sculpture to tapestries and decorative arts.

In 1990, thirteen of the museum’s works were stolen; the high-profile crime remains unsolved and the works have not been recovered.

History

The museum was opened in 1903 by Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840–1924), an American art collector, philanthropist, and patron of the arts. It is housed in a building designed to emulate a 15th-century Venetian palace, drawing particular inspiration from the Venetian Palazzo Barbaro.

Gardner began collecting seriously after she received a large inheritance from her father in 1891. Her purchase of Vermeer‘s The Concert at auction in Paris in 1892 was her first major acquisition. In 1894, Bernard Berenson offered his services in helping her acquire a Botticelli. With his help, Gardner became the first American to own a painting by the Renaissance master. Berenson helped acquire nearly 70 works of art for her collection.

After her husband John L. Gardner’s death in 1898, Isabella Gardner realized their shared dream of building a museum for their treasures. She purchased land in the marshy Fenway area of Boston, and hired architect Willard T. Sears to build a museum modeled on the Renaissance palaces of Venice. Gardner was deeply involved in every aspect of the design, leading Sears to quip that he was merely the structural engineer making Gardner’s design possible. After the construction of the building was complete, Gardner spent a year installing her collection in a way that evokes intimate responses to the art, mixing paintings, furniture, textiles and objects from different cultures and periods among well-known European paintings and sculpture. The gallery installations were very different than they appear today; the Room of Early Italian Paintings, for example, served as her Chinese Room until about 1914.

The museum opened on January 1, 1903 with a grand celebration featuring a performance by members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a menu that included champagne and doughnuts. In 1909 the Museum of Fine Arts moved to its new home close by.

During Gardner’s lifetime, she welcomed artists, performers, and scholars to Fenway Court to draw inspiration from the rich collection and dazzling Venetian setting, including John Singer Sargent, Charles Martin Loeffler, and Ruth St. Denis, among others. Gardner also occasionally hosted artists’ exhibitions within Fenway Court, including one of Anna Coleman Ladd. Today, the museum’s contemporary artist-in-residence program, courtyard garden displays, concerts, and innovative education programs continue Isabella Gardner’s legacy.

When Gardner died in 1924, her will created an endowment of $1 million and outlined stipulations for the support of the museum, including the charge that her collection be permanently exhibited « for the education and enjoyment of the public forever » according to her aesthetic vision and intent.

Gardner appointed her secretary and the former librarian of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Morris Carter (1877–1965) as the museum’s first director. Carter catalogued the entire collection and wrote Gardner’s definitive biography, Isabella Stewart Gardner and Fenway Court. George L. Stout (1897–1978) was the second director. The father of modern conservation, Stout ensured the long-term preservation of the collection and historic structure. Rollin Van Nostrand Hadley (1927–1992) became the third director in 1964. Leaving with a mixed legacy in 1988, Hadley published several catalogues and articles about the collection during his tenure but also disposed of much of the museum’s Asian artwork in 1971. Anne Hawley was director from 1989 until 2015.^[2]

The museum’s current director is Peggy Fogelman.

Design

Built to evoke a 15th-century Venetian palace, the museum itself provides an atmospheric setting for Gardner’s inventive creation. Gardner hired Willard T. Sears to design the building near the marshy Back Bay Fens to house her growing art collection.^[3] Inside the museum, three floors of galleries surround a garden courtyard blooming with life in all seasons.

It is a common misconception that the building was brought to America from Venice and reconstructed.^[4] It was built from the ground up in Boston out of new materials, incorporating numerous architectural fragments from European Gothic and Renaissance structures.

Antique elements are worked into the design of the turn-of-the-century building. Special tiles were custom designed for the floors, modern concrete was used for some of the structural elements, and antique capitals sit atop modern columns. The interior garden courtyard is covered by a glass roof, with steel support structure original to the building.

The Gardner Museum is much admired for the intimate atmosphere in which its works of art are displayed and for its flower-filled courtyard. Most of the art pieces are unlabeled, and the generally low lighting is more akin to a private house than a modern art museum.

In 2013, the museum was designated a Boston Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission.

Collection

Sandro Botticelli, The Story of Lucretia (1496–1504

Gardner collected and carefully displayed a collection of more than 7500 paintings, sculptures, furniture, textiles, silver, ceramics, 1500 rare books, and 7000 archival objects from ancient Rome, Medieval Europe, Renaissance Italy, Asia, the Islamic world, and 19th-century France and America. Among the artists represented in the galleries are Titian, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Manet, Degas, Whistler and Sargent. The first Matisse to enter an American collection is housed in the Yellow Room.

Well-known artworks in the museum’s collection include Titian’s The Rape of Europa, John Singer Sargent’s El Jaleo and Portrait of Isabella Stewart Gardner, Fra Angelico’s Death and Assumption of the Virgin, Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait, Aged 23, Cellini’s Bindo Altoviti, Piero della Francesca’s Hercules, and Botticelli’s The Story of Lucretia.

The archives hold more than 7,000 letters from 1,000 correspondents, including Henry Adams, T.S. Eliot, Sarah Bernhardt, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, in addition to travel albums, dealer receipts, and guest books.

The galleries also contain Gardner’s little-known but extensive book collection that includes early-print editions and manuscripts of Dante, works by miniaturist Jean Bourdichon, incunables, and illuminated manuscripts.

Extension and preservation project

In 2002, after a two-year master planning process, the museum’s board of trustees determined that a new wing was necessary to preserve the historic building and to provide improved spaces for programs that continue Isabella Gardner’s legacy. In 2004, Pritzker Prize–winning architect Renzo Pianoand the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (Genoa, Italy) were selected to design the new wing. The design for the new wing is conceived as a respectful complement to the historic Museum building in scale, form, and materials.

The new expansion includes spaces for visitor services, concerts, special exhibitions, and education and landscape programs, furthering Isabella Gardner’s legacy in art, music, and horticulture while reducing 21st-century strain on the collection and galleries. The completion date was 2012,^[5] and the project cost $118 million.^[6]

Art theft of 1990

In the early morning hours of March 18, 1990, a pair of thieves disguised as Boston police officers robbed the museum of thirteen works of art worth an estimated $500 million – the greatest known property theft in history.^[7] Among the works was The Concert, one of only 34 known by Vermeer and thought to be the most valuable unrecovered painting at over $200 million.^[when?] Also missing is The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, Rembrandt‘s only known seascape.

Despite efforts by the FBI, the works have not yet been recovered. The museum initially offered a reward of $5 million for information leading to recovery of the art, doubled in May 2017 to $10 million.^[8]. Empty frames hang in the Dutch Room gallery as placeholders for the missing works. The selection of stolen works puzzled experts, as more valuable artworks were present in the museum.^[9] According to the FBI, the stolen artwork was moved through the region and offered for sale in Philadelphiaduring the early 2000s. They believe the thieves were members of a criminal organization based in the mid-Atlantic and New England.

Current programs

The museum regularly produces scholarly exhibitions, lectures, family programs, and symposia that provide insights into the historic collection. Through the Artist-in-Residence program, artists in many disciplines are invited to live at and draw inspiration from the museum. The museum often hosts exhibitions of contemporary art, performances, and programs by those selected.

The Gardner’s concert series welcomes musicians and emerging artists to perform classical masterpieces, new music, and jazz on Sunday afternoons and select Thursday evenings. The musical program is also available through concert videos, audio recordings, and a free classical music podcast.

Reflecting Isabella Gardner’s passion for horticulture and garden design, the Gardner’s interior courtyard combines ever-changing horticultural displays with sculpture and architectural elements. The interplay between the courtyard and the museum galleries offers visitors a fresh view from almost every room, inviting connections between art and landscape. Programs like the Landscape Visions lecture series and special Ask the Gardner hours further engage visitors to embrace the art of landscape.

In keeping with Isabella Gardner’s enthusiasm for the Boston Red Sox baseball team, visitors wearing Red Sox paraphernalia receive discounted admission. Visitors named Isabella, or visiting on their birthday, enter free.^[10]

La Nativité mystique (Natività mistica en italien) est une peinture à huile sur toile (108,5 × 74,9 cm) exécutée, autour de 1500–1501, par Sandro Botticelli, et conservée à la National Gallery de Londres.

Historique

L’œuvre est l’unique qui soit signée et datée par Botticelli ; son histoire est néanmoins obscure voire énigmatique. Le tableau qui était probablement destiné à la dévotion privée d’une noble famille florentine est souvent considérée comme le dernier chef-d’œuvre de l’artiste précédant une longue période d’inactivité avant sa mort, comme l’atteste une lettre à Isabelle d’Esteen 1502.

La Nativité mystique a été perdue de vue pendant trois siècles et ce n’est qu’au xviii^e siècle qu’un anglais dénommé William Young Ottley, un riche amateur d’art, vit l’œuvre encore inconnue (Botticelli n’étant pas encore apprécié comme un auteur reconnu), à la Villa Aldobrandini ; il l’acheta et l’emporta à Londres. À sa mort la peinture rejoint la collection Maitland est à la mort de ce dernier la National Gallery de Londres s’est porté acquéreur en 1848.

Le titre « Nativité mystique  » a été attribué par la critique moderne afin de souligner le symbolisme complexe de la scène¹.

Le thème du tableau est une vision de la Nativitédu Christ, interprétée comme une Adoration de l’Enfant avec Marie, les bergers et les mages entre des chœurs d’anges, inspirée par les prophéties de L’Apocalypse selon saint Jean.

Inscription sur la partie supérieure

Une inscription en grec approximatif figure en haut du tableau (traduction) : «  Moi Sandro ai fait ce tableau à la fin de l’an 1500 durant les troubles dont est victime l’Italie à la moitié du temps après le temps accordé au onzième chapitre de saint Jean dans le second sceau de l’apocalypse après la disparition du diable pendant trois ans avant qu’il ne soit enchaîné au douzième chapitre [comme il s’est enterré lui-même] ».

Les anges dans la partie supérieure

Au-dessus de la toiture de la crèche se trouvent trois anges avec des habits blancs, rouges et verts. Ils entonnent un chant en tenant un livre de chant entre les mains. Plus haut, au-delà d’un bosquet qui entoure la grotte, composé d’arbrisseaux élancés disposés en demi-cercle et le ciel bleu azur, le ciel s’ouvre en Paradis sur fond d’or dans lequel un groupe de douze anges habillés de noir, de rouge de blanc, enchaîne une ronde, et tenant des branches d’olivier auxquelles sont accrochés des phylactères portant les inscriptions « Mère de Dieu », « Épouse de Dieu», « Unique reine du monde » ; trois couronnes sont suspendues à ses rubans et surplombent le haut de la crèche.

La grotte

La grotte de la Nativité est située au centre de la composition, Elle est constituée d’un relief rocheux très stylisé, ouvert vers son fond laissant entrevoir un bois couvrant tout le fond de la composition avant un ciel dégradé de bleu ; une étable en devant est constituée d’une toiture en paille soutenue par deux troncs d’arbres et des étais. La Sainte Famille y est placée : l’Enfant Jésus au centre sur une auge couverte d’un drap blanc ; Marie à droite, agenouillée, les mains jointes adorant l’Enfant ; Joseph, à gauche, assis par terre somnolant, derrière lui une branche porte une banderole ; derrière eux, au-delà de leur mangeoire, se trouvent le bœuf et un âne placé plus en hauteur.

Les groupes dans la partie centrale

Sur la gauche de la crèche, un ange vêtu de rose accompagne les trois personnages, portant cape et vêtus d’ocre, de rouge et de vert, couronnés de rameaux d’oliviers.

En regard à droite, un autre ange, habillé de blanc montre l’Enfant à deux personnages agenouillés, jambes nues, chaussures percées.

Les groupes du bas de la composition

En bas, sous un petit sentier surplombé de rochers écaillés, trois groupes identiques d’anges portent des branches d’oliviers et enlacent trois personnages portant robe et cape, couronnés d’oliviers. Des phylactères sur les groupes de gauche portent l’inscription : « Béni soit l’agneau de Dieu, qui a pris pour nous le péché du monde »,

Autour d’eux des diablotins s’enfuient épouvantés en se transperçant de leurs propres fourches et se poussant eux-mêmes dans la profondeur à travers des crevasses dans le sol.

Interprétation

L’œuvre combine le thème de la nativité du Christ avec celui de la Parousie, le retour du Christ sur terre avant le Jour du jugement comme promis dans le livre de Apocalypse : à ce moment-là on assistera à la réconciliation totale entre les hommes et Dieu, comme semblent l’annoncer les figures enlacées au premier plan. Les trois couples pourraient aussi indiquer les moyens de vaincre la présence du mal, c’est-à-dire par la fraternité et par l’exemple des anges, la prière.

Le fantastique manège du haut a été probablement inspiré par une représentation sacrée mise en scène par Filippo Brunelleschidans l’église San Felice in Piazza. Il s’agit d’une recréation de l’Annonciation, dans laquelle des enfants étaient suspendus dans le vide, soutenus par une structure dorée à forme de coupole, simulant un chœur angélique. Ce type de représentation eut un tel succès qu’il a été longtemps répliqué et il est probable que Botticelli l’ait directement observée.

La ronde de ces douze anges doit correspondre aux douze heures du jour et aux douze mois de l’année, suivant les prêches de Savonarole ; comme les couleurs des trois anges du toit invoquant les trois Vertus théologales : blanc pour la Foi, rouge pour la Charité et vert pour l’Espérance ; comme ceux du bas qui portent les mêmes couleurs en anges sauvant les humains des limbes, et ainsi que les démons chassés².

Dans le groupe à gauche de la crèche on pourrait voir librement une interprétation des rois magesvenus adorer l’Enfant (le plus agenouillé est barbu), comme dans le groupe des deux personnages aux chausses trouées et portant besace, agenouillés à droite, en bergers guidés fermement par un ange habillé de blanc.

Style

La composition est caractérisée par des couleurs éclatantes répétées rythmiquement dans les habits des anges et par une disposition extrêmement libre des figures, très éloignée de la rigide géométrie perspective de la culture florentine de la première partie du Quattrocento. Les éléments de style archaïque sont nombreux : fond doré, phylactères, proportions hiérarchiques qui rendent les anges plus petits par rapport à la Vierge selon les conventions de la perspective signifiante de l’art médiéval.

L’espace apparaît dilaté grâce au stratagème de l’ouverture d’un passage dans la grotte et la disposition des personnages sur plusieurs niveaux contribuant à l’augmentation de l’effet de profondeur.

Les symétries marqués, l’attitude des personnages très variée créent une dynamique soutenue.

La composante visionnaire est très présente en opposition aux éléments archaïques de la peinture. Ce contraste détermine la particularité de l’œuvre.

L’irréalisme du tableau est accentué par la présence de textes grecs et latins.

Analyse

Le thème a été probablement inspiré par la situation religieuse et politique florentine à l’aube du xvi^e siècle, avec les évènements tragiques constitués par la descente des troupes de Charles VIII qui envahissent l’Italie, l’exil de Florence de Pierre de Médicis et la prise de pouvoir par le parti de Girolamo Savonarola^3,4. Botticelli, très influencé par les sermons, a du s’adapter au nouveau climat spirituel à Florence instauré par Savonarole. Il abandonne ses inspirations allégorique et mythologique (qui avaient eu tant de succès auprès de la cour des Médicis), en faveur des peintures sacrées. Toutes les œuvres de la sa dernière phase créative à partir des années 1480 sont caractérisées par un repli sur les formes religieuses riches de significations mystiques et symboliques dans un style archaïque en contradiction avec la tendance artistique de l’époque. Son style témoigne désormais d’une inquiétude intime dans l’environnement artistique de l’époque.

Madonna in Glory with Seraphimis a painting by the Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli, executed c. 1469-1470. It is housed in Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence.

Some panel paintings of the Madonna by Botticelli remain from the years around 1470 which are striking expressions of Botticelli’s stylistic development. Two full figure pictures of the Madonna – the Madonna in Glory and the Madonna of the Rosegarden – are in the Uffizi. They represent monumental seated figures filling the entire picture.

Mary is enthroned on clouds in a glory of seraphim. The Christ Child, with the cruciform nimbus, is looking towards the observer and raising his hand in blessing. Botticelli has succeeded in expressing the tensions in this theme with sensitivity: the mother, who is fully aware of the Passion her son will suffer, is holding him protectively in her arms.
