Guido of Siena, was an Italian painter, active during the 13th-century in Siena, and painting in a Byzantine style.

Biography

The name Guido is known from the large panel in the church of San Domenico, Siena of the Virgin and Child Enthroned. The rhymed Latininscription gives the painter’s name as Guido de Senis, with the date 1221. However, this date cannot relate to the painting of the panel, which is usually dated on the basis of style to the 1270s. The faces of the Virgin and Child were scraped and repainted in the early 14th century in the manner of Duccio and so are not representative of Guido’s original. A dossal featuring the Virgin and Child with four saints (accession No. 7) in the Siena Pinacotecahas an identical inscription, but unfortunately the name before « de Senis » has been cut off. It is very often assumed that the missing name is Guido, and gives us some indication of the original appearance of the Madonna at San Domenico.

Beyond this, little is known of Guido da Siena and his place in Sienese painting before Duccio. Because he is the only Sienese painter of the time to have surviving works on panel with a signature, he is often viewed as the most important artistic personality at the time and the first master of the great Sienese school of painting. However, Bellosi has attempted to associate some « Guidesque » works with the names Dietsalvi di Speme and Guido di Graziano, who are documented with the painting of Biccherna book covers for the Sienese commune in the 1270s. Some equate Guido as the father of Meo di Siena.

The Annunciation

Paolo Veneziano, also Veneziano Paolo or Paolo da Venezia (born before 1333, died after 1358) was a medievalpainter from Venice.^[1] He has been called ‘the most important Venetian painter of the 14th century’.^[2] Many signed and dated works of this artist are known. He was regarded as the official painter of the Venetian Republic.^[3]

 

Style

Paolo’s style was indebted to Byzantine influences but also betrays a knowledge of contemporary painting in Rimini. His more advanced works show the influence of gothic art.

Through his art he was the founder of the Venetian school which would exert its influence throughout the 14th century and in particular on Lorenzo Veneziano.^[1]

Giusto de Menabuoi (né à Florence vers 1330 et mort à Padoue entre 1387 et 1391), est un peintre italien de la pré-Renaissance qui fut actif au xiv^e siècle. Artiste très influencé par Giotto, Giusto de Menabuoi fut un spécialiste des scènes religieuses.

Biographie

On possède de nombreux témoignages sur son séjour à Padoue, où il arrive en 1370 pour devenir rapidement le peintre préféré de François l’Ancien, qui lui confère la citoyenneté en 1375. Il restera à Padoue jusqu’à sa mort et y réalisera les fresques de la chapelle Cortellieri (1370), et celles de la chapelle Spisser, dans l’Église des érémitiques de Padoue (1373). Il travaille également, de 1375 à 1378, à la décoration du baptistère du Dôme de Padoue.

La période antérieure à son arrivée à Padoue est moins connue. Probablement originaire de Florence, sa première œuvre connue est le Jugement universel (1350) de l’abbaye de Viboldone, à San Giuliano Milanese, dans la province de Milan. Le travail du peintre démontre alors une connaissance si profonde de la période padouane de Giotto que les spécialistes pensent qu’il avait alors déjà effectué un premier séjour à Padoue et en Vénétie. On lui a attribué, toujours à Viboldone, la décoration de la première chapelle latérale gauche.

L’église Santa Maria di Brera, au cœur de la cité lombarde, conserve de lui quelques fragments qui témoignent d’un travail décoratif plus ample mais aujourd’hui en grande partie perdu.

Andrea della Robbia (October 24, 1435 – August 4, 1525) was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, especially in ceramics.

Biography

Born in Florence, Robbia was the son of Marco della Robbia, whose brother, Luca della Robbia, popularized the use of glazed terra-cotta for sculpture. Andrea became Luca’s pupil, and was the most important artist of ceramic glaze of the times.

He carried on the production of the enamelled reliefs on a much larger scale than his uncle had ever done; he also extended its application to various architectural uses, such as friezes and to the making of lavabos, fountains and large retables. One variety of method was introduced in his enamelled work. Sometimes he omitted the enamel on the face and hands of his figures, especially in those cases where he had treated the heads in a realistic manner; as, for example, in the tympanum relief of the meeting of St Domenic and St Francis in the loggia of the Florentine hospital of San Paolo, a design suggested by a fresco of Fra Angelico‘s in the cloister of St Mark’s.

One of the most remarkable works by Andrea is the series of medallions with reliefs of the Infant Jesus in white on a blue ground set on the front of the foundling hospital in Florence. These child-figures are modelled with skill and variety, no two being alike. Andrea also produced, for guilds and private persons, a large number of reliefs of the Madonna and Child varied with much invention. These are frequently framed with realistic yet decorative garlands of fruit and flowers painted with coloured enamels, while the main relief is left white. The hospital of San Paolo, near Santa Maria Novella, has also a number of fine medallions with reliefs of saints, two of Christ Healing the Sick, and two fine portraits, under which are white plaques inscribed « DALL ANNO 1451 ALL ANNO 1495 ». The first of these dates is the year when the hospital was rebuilt owing to a papal brief sent to the archbishop of Florence.

Arezzo possesses a number of enamelled works by Andrea and his sons: a retable in the cathedral with God holding the Crucified Christ, surrounded by angels, and below, kneeling figures of San Donato and San Bernardino; also in the chapel of the Campo Santo is a relief of the Madonna and Child with four saints at the sides. In Santa Maria in Grado is a noble retable with angels holding a crown over a standing figure of the Madonna; a number of small figures of worshippers take refuge in the folds of the Virgin’s mantle, a favourite motive for sculpture dedicated by guilds or other corporate bodies. Perhaps the finest collection of works of this class is at La Verna, not far from Arezzo.^[1] The best of these, three large retables with representations of the Annunciation, the Crucifixion, and the Madonna giving her Girdle to St Thomas, are probably the work of Andrea himself, the others being by his sons.

In 1489 Andrea made a relief of the Virgin and two Angels, now over the archive-room door in the Florentine Opera del Duomo; for this he was paid twenty gold florins.^[2] In the same year he modelled the tympanum relief over a door of Prato cathedral, with a half length figure of the Madonna between St Stephen and St Lawrence, surrounded by a frame of angels’ heads. In 1491 he was still working at Prato, where many of his best reliefs still exist. A bust of San Lino exists over the side door of Volterra Cathedral, which is attributed to Andrea. Other late works of known date are a magnificent bust of the Protonotary Almadiano, made in 1510 for the church of San Giovanni de’ Fiorentini at Viterbo, and a medallion of the Virgin in Glory, surrounded by angels, made in 1505 for Pistoia cathedral. The latest work attributed to Andrea, though apparently only a workshop production of 1515, is a relief representing the Adoration of the Magi, made for a little church, St Maria, in Pian di Mugnone (it), near Florence.

His workshop was carried on by his son Giovanni della Robbia after his death.
