Les thermes de Constantin (en latin : Thermae Constantinianae ou Constantinianum lavacruma 1) sont les derniers grands thermes impériauxconstruits à Rome, sur le Quirinal, à l’instigation de Constantin Ier.

Localisation

Les Régionnaires de Rome situent les thermes dans la Regio VI, dans la partie méridionale du plateau occupant le sommet du Quirinal. Ils occupent l’espace restreint délimité par le Vicus Longus, l’Alta Semita, le Clivus Salutis et le Vicus Laci Fundani1. Comme les thermes sont construits sur les pentes de la colline, il a été nécessaire d’aménager auparavant une large plate-forme artificielle recouvrant les ruines des habitations plus anciennes des iie, iiie et ive siècle2.

Histoire

Les thermes sont gravement endommagés lors d’un incendie puis d’un tremblement de terre. Ils sont remis en état en 443 par le préfet de la Ville Petronius Perpenna Magnus Quadratianusa 2,1. D’importants vestiges sont encore visibles au début du xvie siècle, permettant aux architectes et artistes de cette époque d’établir des relevés. Ces ruines sont entièrement détruites entre 1605 et 1621 pour libérer l’espace nécessaire à la construction du Palazzo Rospigliosi3.

Description

Étant donné les contraintes topographiques du site choisi pour la construction, le plan des thermes de Constantin diffère sensiblement du plan-type adopté par les autres thermes impériaux. L’édifice est orienté selon un axe nord-sud avec des entrées principales au centre du côté nord et sur le côté ouest. Comme les salles principales occupent tout l’espace entre les deux rues latérales, il n’y a pas de péribole comme pour les autres thermes impériaux. Il est remplacé par une enceinte qui s’étend plus loin que les salles balnéaires et qui se rejoignent au nord par un mur courbe. L’entrée occidentale est précédée d’une large volée de marches qui mènent du sommet de la colline jusqu’au Champ de Mars en contrebas. Le fait que le frigidarium soit construit sur un axe nord-sud et non est-ouest est une autre conséquence de l’adaptation à un espace limité. Le caldarium et le tepidarium, placés derrière le frigidarium, sont tous deux de formes circulaires2.

Quelques statues qui faisaient partie de la décoration de l’établissement balnéaire ont été retrouvées sur place, comme les statues colossales des Dioscures avec leurs chevaux qui ornent aujourd’hui la Piazza del Quirinale. Ces statues ont probablement été placées dans les thermes lors de la restauration de 4431. On peut également citer les statues en bronze d’un pugiliste et d’athlètes exposées de nos jours dans le Palais Massimo alle Terme et deux statues de Constantin, l’une placée actuellement dans la basilique Saint-Jean-de-Latran et l’autre Piazza del Campidoglio avec une statue de son fils Constant Ier2.

Baths of Constantine (Latin, Thermae Constantinianae) was a public bathing complex built on the Quirinal Hill in Rome by Constantine I, probably before 315.[1]

Ancient Constantinople and Arles also had complexes known as Baths of Constantine.

History

Construction and plan

The last of Rome’s bath complexes, they were constructed in the irregular space between the vicus Longus, the Alta Semita, the clivus Salutis and the vicus laci Fundani, and as this was on a side-hill, it was necessary to demolish 4th-century houses then on the site (beneath which are ruins of second- and third-century houses) and make an artificial level over their ruins.[2] Because of these peculiar conditions these thermae differed in plan from all others in the city – no anterooms were provided on either side of the caldarium, for instance, since the building was too narrow. The building was oriented north-south so as to heat it using the sun, with principal entrances on the west side, with a flight of steps down from the hill’s summit to the campus Martius, and on the middle of the north side.

As the main structure occupied all the space between the streets on the east and west, the ordinary peribolus was replaced by an enclosure across the front which was bounded on the north by a curved line, an area now occupied by the Palazzo della Consulta. The frigidarium seems to have its longer axis north and south instead of east and west, and behind it were tepidarium and caldarium both circular in shape.

The only reference to these baths in ancient literature is in Ammianus Marcellinus,[3] though they are mentioned in the Einsiedeln Itinerary(1.10; 3.6; 7.11).

5th century

The baths suffered greatly from fire and earthquake in the century after their construction and were restored in 443 by the city prefectPetronius Perpenna Magnus Quadratinus,[4] at which time it is probable that the colossal statues of the Dioscuri and horses, now in the Piazza del Quirinale, were set up within them.[5] The Baths of Constantine probably remained in use until the Gothic War (535–554) when all but one of the aqueducts were cut by the Ostrogoths.

Rediscovery

Enough of the structure was standing at the beginning of the sixteenth century to permit of plans and drawings by the architects of that period, and these are the chief sources of our knowledge of the building.[6] The remains were almost entirely destroyed in 1605‑1621 during the construction of the Palazzo Rospigliosi, but some traces were found a century later,[7] and since 1870.[8] Some of these can now be seen beneath the Palazzo’s casina.

Konstantinsthermen (Rom)

Überreste der Thermen im 16. Jahrhundert

Die Konstantinsthermen waren die letzten großen Thermen, die im antiken Rom erbaut wurden. Sie wurden möglicherweise von Kaiser Maxentius begonnen und unter Konstantin dem Großen vollendet.

Konstruktion und Architektur

Über die Thermen, die in der Regierungszeit Konstantins im Juli 315 n. Chr., als dieser sich in Rom aufhielt, eingeweiht wurden, ist nur wenig bekannt. Sie wurden auf dem unregelmäßigen freien Raum zwischen dem Vicus Longus, der Alta Semita, dem Clivus Salutis und dem Vicus laci Fundani erbaut. Da das Gelände hügelig war, wurden die bereits auf dem Gelände stehenden Wohnhäuser aus dem 3. Jahrhundert als Unterbau verwendet, um eine Ebene zu erhalten, auf der die Thermen errichtet wurden.[1] Aufgrund der verfügbaren Grundstücksfläche unterscheiden sich die Thermen von allen anderen in Rom. So wurde beispielsweise auf beiden Seiten des Caldariums auf Vorräume verzichtet, da der verfügbare Platz zu schmal war. Die Anlage war von Norden nach Süden ausgerichtet, um die Sonne zur Erwärmung zu nutzen. Die Haupteingänge lagen in der Mitte der Nordseite und im Westen, von wo aus eine Freitreppe vom Hügelgipfel zum Marsfeld (Campus Martius) hinunterführte.

Da das Hauptgebäude sämtlichen Raum zwischen den Straßen im Westen und Osten einnahm, wurde auf den üblichen Peribolos verzichtet und nur der Vorderteil der Anlage mit einer halbkreisförmigen Umfassungsmauer umgeben, wo heute der Palazzo della Consulta steht. Das Frigidarium scheint seine längere Achse in Nordsüdausrichtung besessen zu haben statt in Ost-West-Ausrichtung. Dahinter befanden sich das Tepidarium und das Caldarium, jeweils in runder Form.

Zwei Erwähnungen der Thermenanlage in antiken Quellen finden sich bei Aurelius Victor[2], und bei Ammianus Marcellinus[3]. Der von ihm angesprochene Versuch einer Brandstiftung gehört ins Jahr 367. Eine weitere Beschädigung mag während der Besetzung Roms durch die Westgoten des Heerkönigs Alarich I. im August 410 vorgekommen sein. Darüber hinaus wird die Anlage im 9. Jahrhundert im Itinerarium Einsidlense[4] genannt.

Die Bäder litten im Jahrhundert nach ihrer Errichtung stark durch Feuer und Erdbeben und wurden 443 n. Chr. vom Stadtpräfekten Petronius Perpenna Magnus Quadratianus renoviert, was inschriftlich belegt ist.[5] Zu dieser Zeit könnten die beiden Dioskurenstatuen, die sich jetzt auf der Piazza del Quirinale befinden, in den Thermen aufgestellt worden sein.[6]

Wiederentdeckung

Zu Beginn des sechzehnten Jahrhunderts waren noch genügend Mauerreste der Anlage vorhanden, die es den damaligen Architekten ermöglichten, Grundrisse und Zeichnungen anzufertigen, von denen das meiste heutige Wissen über die Anlage stammt.[7] Die Überreste wurden zwischen 1605 und 1621 während des Baus des später so genannten Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi im Auftrag von Kardinal Scipione Borghese beinahe vollständig zerstört. Allerdings wurden ein Jahrhundert später einige Reste[8] wiederentdeckt[9]. Sie können nun in der Nähe des Casinos des Palazzos besichtigt werden. Weitere Ruinenteile wurden beim Bau der Via Nazionale1876–1897 gefunden, aber weitgehend zerstört.
