Milon de Crotone (grec ancien : Μίλων) est un athlète grec du vi^e siècle av. J.-C., originaire de la cité de Crotone. Il remporta de nombreux titres lors des Jeux panhelléniques dans les décennies 540 à 510 av. J.-C. dans les épreuves de lutte.

Sa vie et sa mort sont l’objet de nombreuses légendes relatées dans les récits des trois principales biographies antiques de Pythagore, par Diogène Laërce, Porphyre (Vie de Pythagore) et Jamblique (Vie de Pythagore), ainsi que par Plutarque et Justin.

Histoire

Milon était probablement issu d’une très bonne famille de Crotone¹.

Milon obtint son premier titre olympique de lutteen 540 av. J.-C. dans l’épreuve réservée aux jeunes garçons lors des 60^ejeux olympiques. Il fut à nouveau couronné, cinq ou six fois de suite dans les épreuves des adultes de 536 à 520 voire 516 av. J.-C.¹. Il fut quatre fois consécutives « periodonikès » : vainqueur aux quatre concours pentétériques lors des quatre ans d’une même olympiade². Il arriva que lors d’une compétition, aucun adversaire ne se présentât pour lutter contre lui : il était alors proclamé vainqueur par défaut².

Il fut finalement vaincu par son compatriote Timasithéos de Crotone lors des 67^e jeux en 512 av. J.-C. Ce dernier réussit à l’épuiser en refusant le contact³.

Milon est aussi crédité de 7 titres aux jeux pythiques (dont un en catégorie enfant), 9 titres aux jeux de Némée et 10 titres aux jeux isthmiques¹.

Sa force légendaire servit à sa cité dans son affrontement contre sa rivale Sybaris. Milon aurait mené à la victoire une troupe pourtant trois fois moins nombreuse, vêtu d’une peau de lion et armé d’un gourdin pour rappeler Héraclès¹.

Il est considéré par certains auteurs comme disciple de Pythagore dont il aurait épousé la fille Myia. Le médecin Démocédès serait son gendre¹.

Légende

Milon est devenu légendaire en raison de sa force extraordinaire.

Lors d’une de ses victoires olympiques par défaut, Milon, en allant chercher sa couronne, aurait glissé et serait tombé. Des spectateurs auraient crié qu’il avait dès lors perdu. Milon se serait tourné vers la foule pour rappeler que le règlement précisait que les deux épaules devaient toucher trois fois le sol et qu’elles n’avaient touché qu’une fois. Il invitait donc n’importe quel spectateur à venir lui mettre les épaules à terre deux fois supplémentaires. Le public se serait alors tu².

Il aurait mangé en une seule fois vingt livres (ou vingt mines) de viande, autant de pain et quinze pintes de vin suffisaient à peine à le rassasier. Un jour, ayant parcouru toute la longueur d’un stade, portant sur ses épaules un taureau de trois (ou quatre ans), il l’assomma d’un coup de poing, et le mangea tout entier dans la journée¹. Cependant, sa gloutonnerie devint aussi un des aspects récurrents dans ses biographies, servant à justifier sa déchéance finale¹.

Il aurait régulièrement apporté lui-même sur l’Altis, sur son dos, la statue commémorant sa victoire olympique¹.

Il aurait commencé sa carrière en portant sur ses épaules chaque jour un jeune veau. Le veau étant devenu adulte, il continuait à le soulever aisément, cet entraînement légendaire étant à l’origine du proverbe grec « qui l’a bien porté veau peut le porter taureau »⁴.

D’après Pline l’Ancien, il aurait toujours emporté avec lui des gastrolithes de coq (cailloux que l’animal conserve dans son gésier pour faciliter la digestion) : il aurait considéré que cela lui portait chance^1,2.

Il aurait tenu une grenade dans sa main, et, par la seule application de ses doigts, sans écraser ni presser ce fruit, il la tenait si bien que personne ne pouvait la lui arracher^2,5.

Il aurait mis le pied sur un disque graissé d’huile, et par conséquent très glissant ; cependant, quelque effort que l’on fît, il n’était pas possible de l’ébranler, ni de lui faire lâcher pied².

Il se serait ceint la tête d’une corde, en guise de ruban ; puis retenait sa respiration : dans cet état violent, le sang se portant au front lui enflait tellement les veines, que la corde rompait^2,5.

Il se serait tenu le bras droit dans le dos, la main ouverte, le pouce levé, les doigts joints, et alors nul homme n’eût pu lui séparer le petit doigt d’avec les autres ; ou à l’inverse, le petit doigt écarté, il demandait qu’on essayât de le rapprocher des autres, sans succès².

Il eut une occasion de faire un usage de ses forces. Un jour qu’il écoutait les leçons de Pythagore, le plafond de la salle où l’auditoire était assemblé menaçant de s’effondrer, il le soutint lui seul, donna aux auditeurs le temps de se retirer et se sauva après eux. La confiance qu’il avait en ses forces finit par lui être fatale.

La postérité le tient pour le meilleur athlète (au sens de combattant) de l’Antiquité, devançant, dans le quatuor canonique des champions : Théagène de Thasos, le premier à s’être imposé dans deux disciplines différentes (pugilat et pancrace) ; Glaucos de Carystos, le gigantesque boxeur ; et Polydamas de Scotoussa, le pancratiaste, appelé « l’homme le plus grand ayant jamais vécu » par l’auteur Pausanias le Périégète.

Mort

Selon la légende, Milon, parvenu à un âge avancé, traversait l’Italie et, ayant trouvé en chemin un vieux chêne abattu et entrouvert, il entreprit d’achever de le fendre avec ses mains ; mais l’arbre retrouva son état d’origine, et l’athlète n’ayant pas eu le temps de retirer ses doigts, resta finalement prisonnier de l’arbre, ses mains étant prises comme dans un étau : il ne put se dégager, et, incapable de se défendre, il fut dévoré par des loups^6,1.

En réalité, il est probablement mort dans l’incendie criminel de sa maison où les principaux chefs du parti pythagoricien étaient alors réunis, lors d’une guerre civile à Crotone, dominée par l’hétairie des Pythagoriciens⁷.

Dans un tableau réalisé vers 1535 par le Pordenone (Milon dévoré par le lion, University of Chicago), l’artiste a remplacé les loups par des fauves africains. Cette fantaisie artistique se retrouve, un siècle et demi plus tard, dans le célèbre groupe de marbre de Pierre Pugetconservé au Louvre : Milon de Crotone (1682).

Milo of Croton (/ˈmaɪloʊ/; Greek: Μίλων, Mílōn; gen.: Μίλωνος, Mílōnos) was a 6th-century BC wrestler from the Magna Graecian city of Croton, who enjoyed a brilliant wrestling career and won many victories in the most important athletic festivals of ancient Greece.^[1][2][3] In addition to his athletic victories, Milo is credited by the ancient commentator Diodorus Siculuswith leading his fellow citizens to military triumph over neighboring Sybaris in 510 BC.

Milo was also said to have carried a bull on his shoulders, and to have burst a band about his brow by simply inflating the veins of his temples.

The date of Milo’s death is unknown, but he reportedly was attempting to tear a tree apart when his hands became trapped in a crevice in its trunk, and a pack of wolves surprised and devoured him. Milo has been depicted in works of art by Pierre Puget, Étienne-Maurice Falconet and others. In literature, he has been referenced by Rabelais in Gargantua and Pantagruel, by Shakespeare in Troilus and Cressida, and also by Alexandre Dumas in The Man in the Iron Mask.

Athletic career

Milo was a six-time Olympic victor. He won the boys’ wrestling (probably in 540 BC),^[4] and thereafter five men’s wrestling titles between 536 and 520 BCE.^[1][2][3] He also won seven crowns at the Pythian Games at Delphi (one as a boy), ten at the Isthmian Games, and nine at the Nemean Games.^[2] Milo was a five-time Periodonikēs, a « grand slam » sort of title bestowed on the winner of all four festivals in the same cycle.^[3] Milo’s career at the highest level of competition must have spanned 24 years.^[2]

Milo was defeated (or tied) in his attempt at a seventh Olympic title in 516 BCE by a young wrestler from Croton who practiced the technique of akrocheirismos—literally, ‘highhandedness’ or wrestling at arm’s length—and by doing so, avoided Milo’s crushing embrace. Simple fatigue took its toll on Milo.^[1][2][3]

Milo’s hometown had a reputation for producing excellent athletes. In the Olympiad of 576 BC, for example, the first seven finishers in the stade—a 200 yards (180 m) sprint—were all men of Croton. After Milo’s career, Croton apparently produced no other athletes of renown.^[3]

Military experience

About 510 BC, hostilities arose between Croton and nearby Sybaris when Telys, a Sybarite tyrant, banished the 500 wealthiest citizens of Sybaris after seizing their property. When the displaced Sybarites sought refuge at Croton and Telys demanded their return, an opportunity for the Crotoniates to destroy a powerful neighbor presented itself.^[5] In an account that appeared five hundred years after the event, Diodorus Siculus wrote that the philosopher Pythagoras, who spent much of his life at Croton, urged the Croton assembly to protect the banished citizens of Sybaris. When the decision to do so was made, the dispute between the two cities was aggravated, each took up arms, and Milo led the charge against Sybaris.^[3][6]

According to Diodorus (XII, 9):

« One hundred thousand men of Croton were stationed with three hundred thousand Sybarite troops ranged against them. Milo the athlete led them and through his tremendous physical strength first turned the troops lined up against him. »

Diodorus indicates Milo led the charge against the Sybarites wearing his Olympic crowns, draped in a lionskin and brandishing a club in a manner similar to the mythic hero Heracles (see adjacent image).^[1][2][3]

Personal life

According to Pausanias he was the son of Diotimus.^[7] Ancient commentators mention an association between Milo and the philosopher Pythagoras, who lived at or near Croton for many years.^[2] Commentators may have confused the philosopher with an athletic trainer, Pythagoras of Samos, but it is also possible the trainer and the philosopher were the same person.^[8]

It was said Milo saved Pythagoras’s life when a pillar collapsed in a banquet hall and he supported the roof until Pythagoras could reach safety.^[2] He may have married Myia, a Pythagorean herself or possibly Pythagoras’ daughter.^[2][3] Diogenes Laertius(VIII, 39) says Pythagoras died in a fire in Milo’s house,^[2] but Dicaearchus (as cited by Diogenes Laertius, VIII, 40) says Pythagoras died in the temple of the Muses at Metapontum of self-imposed starvation. Porphyry (Vita Pythagorae, 55) says Milo’s house at Croton was burned and the Pythagoreans within stoned.^[9]

Herodotus (III, 137-38), who lived some years after Milo’s death, says the wrestler accepted a large sum of money from the distinguished physician Democedes for the privilege of marrying Milo’s daughter. If Herodotus is indeed correct, then Milo was probably not a member of Croton’s nobility for such an arrangement with a wage-earning physician would have been beneath the dignity of a Greek noble.^[2]Democedes was a native of Croton and enjoyed a successful career as a physician at Croton, Aegina, Athens, and Samos. He was captured by Darius in the defeat of the Samian tyrant Polycrates and taken to the Persian capital of Susa as a slave. There, he carefully tended both the king and queen and was eventually permitted to revisit Croton, but under guard. He escaped his Persian guards and made his way to Croton, where he married Milo’s daughter. The physician sent a message regarding his marriage to Darius, who was an admirer of the wrestler and can only have learned of him through Democedes during his slavery at Susa.^[10]

Cultural representations

Place of champions in Greek culture

Like the tragic protagonists of Greek drama, the Greek athlete had a « larger than life » quality. At Olympia, for example, they were set apart from the general population for lengthy training periods and the observation of a complex series of prohibitions that included abstinence from intercourse. Once training was completed and the athletes were brought before their fellow citizens trim, fit, nude and shimmering with oil, they must have appeared semi-divine.^[11]

The reverential awe in which athletes were held in Greece led to exaggeration in the tales surrounding their lives. In Milo’s case, Aristotle (Ethica Nichomachea, II, 6 = 1106b) began the myth-making process with reports likening Milo unto Heracles in his enormous appetite, and Athenaeus (X, 412e-f) continued the process with the story of Milo carrying a bull—a feat also associated with Heracles. It is Milo’s sudden death which makes him most akin to the heroes: there is a hint of hubris in his attempt to rend the tree asunder, and striking contrast between his glorious athletic achievements and his sudden ignoble death.^[11]

Feats of strength

Anecdotes about Milo’s almost superhuman strength and lifestyle abound. His daily diet allegedly consisted of 9 kg (20 lbs) of meat, 9 kg (20 lbs) of bread, and 10 litres (18 pt) of wine.^[3] Pliny the Elder (XXXVII, 54 = 144) and Solinus (De mirabilibus mundi, 77) both attribute Milo’s invincibility in competition to the wrestler’s consumption of alectoriae, the gizzard stones of roosters.^[2][12] Legends say he carried his own bronze statue to its place at Olympia, and once carried a four-year-old bull on his shoulders before slaughtering, roasting, and devouring it in one day.^[2][3] He was said to have achieved the feat of lifting the bull by starting in childhood, lifting and carrying a newborn calf and repeating the feat daily as it grew to maturity.^[13][14]

One report says the wrestler was able to hold a pomegranate without damaging it while challengers tried to pry his fingers from it, and another report says he could burst a band fastened around his brow by inhaling air and causing the temple veins to swell. He was said to maintain his footing on an oiled discus while others tried to push him from it.^[2][3][15] These feats have been attributed to misinterpretations of statues depicting Milo with his head bound in victor’s ribbons, his hand holding the apple of victory, and his feet positioned on a round disc that would have been fitted into a pedestal or base.^[3]

When he participated in the Olympics for the seventh time and collided against a fellow, the eighteen year Timasiteo, who admired him as a child and where he also learned many moves, the final, his opponent bowed before they had even started fighting, in a sign of respect. This was the only case in the history of Greece when we remember the name of the man who finished second in a race / competition. For his exploits as a supporter of the Dameas erected a statue in the stadium of Olympia, where he was represented standing on a disc with their feet united.^{[citation needed]}

While one report says Milo held his arm outstretched and challengers were unable to bend his fingers, another anecdote recorded by Claudius Aelianus (Varia historia, XII, 12) disputes Milo’s reputation for enormous strength. Apparently, Milo challenged a peasant named Titormus to a trial of strength. Titormus proclaimed he had little strength, but lifted a boulder to his shoulders, carried it several meters and dropped it. Milo was unable to lift it.^[16]

Death

The Ancient Greeks typically attributed remarkable deaths to famous persons in keeping with their characters.^[2] The date of Milo’s death is unknown, but according to Strabo (VI, 1, 12) and Pausanias (VI, 14, 8), Milo was walking in a forest when he came upon a tree-trunk split with wedges. In what was probably intended as a display of strength, Milo inserted his hands into the cleft to rend the tree. The wedges fell from the cleft, and the tree closed upon his hands, trapping him. Unable to free himself, the wrestler was devoured by wolves.^[1][2][3] A modern historian has suggested it is more likely that Milo was traveling alone when attacked by wolves. Unable to escape, he was devoured and his remains found at the foot of a tree.^[3]

Milo’s legendary strength and death have become the subjects of modern art and literature. His death was a popular subject in 18th-century art. In many images of this period his killer is portrayed as a lion rather than wolves. In Pierre Puget‘s sculpture Milo of Croton (1682), the work’s themes are the loss of strength with age, and the ephemerality of glory as symbolized by an Olympic trophy lying in the dust.^[17]

Étienne-Maurice Falconet‘s marble Milo of Croton(1754) secured his admission to the Académie des beaux-arts, but was later criticized for lack of nobility. The work clashed with the classical ideal requiring a dying hero to express stoic restraint.^[18]

Milo was the subject of a bronze by Alessandro Vittoria circa 1590, and another bronze now standing in Holland Park, London by an unknown nineteenth-century artist. A sculpture was made by John Graham Lough and exhibited at the Royal Academy. It was depicted by Ralph Hedley in a painting of the artist in his studio,^[19] and a bronze cast of it stands in the grounds of Blagdon Hall, Northumberland.

His death is also depicted in paintings. It is the subject of an eighteenth-century oil on canvas by Joseph-Benoît Suvée and a work by the eighteenth-century Irish painter James Barry.

In literature, François Rabelais compares Gargantua’s strength to that of Milo’s in Gargantua and Pantagruel, and Shakespeare refers anachronistically to « bull-bearing Milo » in Act 2 of Troilus and Cressida. In Emily Brontë‘s Wuthering Heights, character Catherine Earnshaw refers to the circumstances of Milo’s demise when she says, « Who is to separate us, pray? They’ll meet the fate of Milo! » In Johann Wyss‘ novel Swiss Family Robinson, the youngest son Franz is entrusted with a bull buffalo to raise, and from which gains comparison to Milo. Alexandre Dumas has the strongest of the Three Musketeers, Porthos, mention « Milo of Crotona » saying that he had replicated a list of his feats of strength – all except breaking a cord tied around the head, whereupon d’Artagnan tells Porthos that it is because his strength is not in his head (a joke about Porthos being a bit dim-witted).

Milon

Milon (auch Milon von Kroton, griechisch Μίλων Mílōn, lateinisch Milo; * um 555 v. Chr.; † nach 510 v. Chr.) war ein griechischer Ringkämpfer und gehörte zu den berühmtesten Athleten der Antike. Er lebte in seiner Heimatstadt Kroton (heute Crotone in Kalabrien, Süditalien) und war ein Zeitgenosse und Anhänger des Philosophen Pythagoras von Samos. Außerdem war er ein erfolgreicher Heerführer.

Leben

Über Milons Herkunft ist nur der Name seines ansonsten unbekannten Vaters Diotimos überliefert. Er errang seinen ersten olympischen Sieg in seiner Disziplin, dem Ringkampf, unter den Knaben an den 60. Olympischen Spielen im Jahr 540 v. Chr.; daher ist seine Geburt um 555 v. Chr. anzusetzen. Sein erster olympischer Sieg unter den Männern war derjenige an den 62. Spielen (532 v. Chr.); im Zeitraum 532–516 v. Chr. siegte er fünfmal hintereinander. Somit war er insgesamt sechsfacher Sieger. Bei den Pythischen Spielen in Delphi, die ebenso wie die Olympischen Spiele alle vier Jahre veranstaltet wurden, siegte er siebenmal (das erste Mal als Knabe).^[1] Bei den Isthmischen Spielen, die alle zwei Jahre abgehalten wurden, war er zehnmal siegreich und bei den ebenfalls alle zwei Jahre stattfindenden Nemeischen Spielen neunmal. Damit erhielt er sechsmal den Titel des Periodoniken, welcher einem Sportler verliehen wurde, wenn er in einem Vierjahreszyklus in allen vier Panhellenischen Spielen gesiegt hatte. Milon war der erste Periodonike, dessen Name überliefert ist, und der einzige sechsfache in der gesamten Antike. Zum siebenfachen Periodoniken fehlte ihm nur noch ein olympischer Sieg, doch als er im Jahre 512 v. Chr. zum siebten Mal in Olympia antrat, gelang es ihm nicht, den jüngeren Gegner Timasitheos von Kroton, der ihm geschickt auswich, zu fassen und zu werfen. Der Kampf scheint unentschieden geendet zu haben.^[2]

Im Jahre 510 v. Chr. brach zwischen Kroton und Sybaris ein Krieg aus, nachdem die Krotoniaten sich geweigert hatten, Flüchtlinge aus Sybaris auszuliefern. Pythagoras, zu dessen Anhängern – den Pythagoreern – Milon zählte, lebte damals in Kroton und trat für eine harte Haltung gegenüber Sybaris ein. Die Krotoniaten übertrugen Milon das Amt des Feldherrn, woraus ersichtlich ist, dass er eine prominente politische Rolle spielte. Er errang einen entscheidenden Sieg, Sybaris wurde eingenommen und geplündert. Dies ist die letzte überlieferte Nachricht aus Milons Leben; wann er starb, ist unbekannt.

Noch lange nach Milons Tod war sein Haus die Versammlungsstätte der Pythagoreer von Kroton. Bei den antipythagoreischen Unruhen, die um die Mitte oder in der zweiten Hälfte des 5. Jahrhunderts ausbrachen, wurde das Haus niedergebrannt.^[3]

Milon soll mit einer Tochter des Pythagoras namens Myia verheiratet gewesen sein. Er hatte eine Tochter, die den berühmten Arzt Demokedes heiratete, der Leibarzt des Perserkönigs Dareios I.gewesen war und sich dann in Kroton niedergelassen hatte.

Legende und Wirklichkeit

Die Angaben der antiken Quellen über Milons Persönlichkeit gehen weit auseinander, und demgemäß ist auch das Milon-Bild in der Moderne widersprüchlich und teilweise von klischeehaften Vorstellungen geprägt. Aus glaubwürdigen Berichten geht hervor, dass er philosophische Interessen hatte und den führenden Kreisen seiner Heimatstadt angehörte; daraus lässt sich folgern, dass er vornehmer Herkunft war. Eine gegenteilige, legendenhafte Überlieferung lässt ihn als dummen Kraftprotz und Vielfraß erscheinen, der schließlich seiner Torheit und Maßlosigkeit zum Opfer fiel; dazu passt die Vorstellung, dass er ein Emporkömmling war. In einem Teil der zahlreichen Anekdoten der Milon-Legende und in späten Quellen wird er zum Muster eines negativ bewerteten Schwerathleten, dessen einseitige Entwicklung und Betonung körperlicher Fähigkeiten ihn zu einer staunenswerten, aber im Grunde lächerlichen Gestalt macht.^[4]

Ein Bericht, wonach sich Milon den legendären Helden Herakles zum Vorbild nahm und demgemäß mit Löwenfell und Keule in die Schlacht zog, spiegelt wohl sein tatsächliches Selbstbild. Erst in später, verzerrender Darstellung wurde daraus das Klischee eines rein körperorientierten Kraftmenschen ohne geistige Gaben. Die Anekdoten um Milon entsprangen wohl ursprünglich dem Staunen über seine einzigartigen Erfolge und wurden später maßlos übersteigert, phantasievoll ausgeschmückt und ins Negative gewendet. Hintergrund war eine generell negative Beurteilung des Leistungssports in Philosophen- und Ärztekreisen.^[5] Unter anderem wurden folgende Geschichten erzählt:^[6]

• Er pflegte regelmäßig ein Kalb auf seinen Schultern zu tragen und konnte es dank dieses Trainings noch stemmen, als es zum Stier herangewachsen war.^[7]
• Er hob einen vierjährigen Stier auf seine Schultern und trug ihn durch das Stadion von Olympia. Anschließend schlachtete und verzehrte er ihn an einem einzigen Tag.
• Einen Granatapfel, den er in der Hand hielt, konnte ihm niemand entwinden, und die Frucht blieb dabei unbeschädigt.
• Wenn er sich auf einen eingeölten Diskos stellte, konnte niemand ihn hinunterstoßen.
• Er brachte eine um seinen Kopf gebundene Darmsaite zum Platzen, indem er den Atem anhielt und die Stirnadern anschwellen ließ.
• Als während einer gemeinsamen Mahlzeit eine der Säulen des Hauses brach, stützte er die stürzenden Balken, bis alle Anwesenden sich gerettet hatten.
• Er aß täglich 17 Pfund Fleisch, 17 Pfund Brot und trank rund 10 Liter Wein.
• Er trug seine eigene Siegerstatue in die Altis, den heiligen Hain von Olympia.
• Er verlor sein Leben beim Versuch, im Wald einen gespaltenen Baumstamm, der mit Keilen auseinandergespreizt war, auseinanderzureißen. Nachdem er die Keile entfernt hatte, wurde er eingeklemmt, konnte sich nicht mehr befreien und wurde dann von Wölfen gefressen.

Gegen die Annahme niederer Herkunft, mangelnder Bildung und geringer Intelligenz sprechen folgende Argumente:

• Einer von Herodot erzählten Legende zufolge rühmte sich Demokedes gegenüber dem Perserkönig seiner Heirat mit Milons Tochter. Das wäre sinnlos gewesen, wenn Milon aus niederen Verhältnissen gestammt hätte, denn sportlicher Erfolg hätte einen solchen Makel nicht kompensiert und die Mitteilung hätte den König nicht beeindrucken können. Auch wenn diese Nachricht historisch nicht stimmt, lässt sie doch erkennen, dass die Heirat mit Milons Tochter für den berühmten Arzt einen sozialen Aufstieg bedeutete.^[8]
• Die Pythagoreer, zu denen Milon gehörte, standen den führenden Familien Krotons nahe; sie pflegten religiös-philosophische Bildung und hätten einen ungebildeten Menschen ohne entsprechende Neigungen und Fähigkeiten kaum aufgenommen.
• Der Umstand, dass die Krotoniaten in einem überlebenswichtigen Krieg Milon das Kommando anvertrauten, lässt erkennen, dass seine Mitbürger seine geistigen Fähigkeiten hoch einschätzten.^[9]
• Soweit die Quellen Rückschlüsse auf die soziale Herkunft der Athleten im 6. Jahrhundert ermöglichen, zeigt sich, dass die Teilnahme an den Olympischen Spielen auf die Aristokratie beschränkt war.^[10]

Neuzeitliche Rezeption

Im Jahre 1682 schuf der französische Bildhauer Pierre Pugeteine Darstellung der Legende von Milons Tod im Wald („Milon mit dem Löwen kämpfend“, heute im Louvre). Im 18. Jahrhundert entstand eine Milon-Statue von Johann Gottfried Knöffler im Großen Garten in Dresden und eine von Etienne-Maurice Falconet (heute im Louvre). 1777 fertigte Johann Heinrich Dannecker einen sterbenden Milon aus Gips an, 1784 gestaltete Alexander Trippel dasselbe Thema. Goethe kritisierte solche bildhauerischen Bemühungen heftig, da er das Thema abstoßend fand.^[11]
