Christ de la Minerve ou Le Christ rédempteurou encore le Christ portant la croix est une sculpture du grand peintre et sculpteur italien de la Renaissance Michel-Ange, conservée aujourd’hui en l’Église de la Minerve à Rome.

Description

Le Christ de la Minerve, également connu comme le Christ rédempteur ou le Christ portant la croix est une sculpture en marbre de l’époque Haute Renaissance du maître italien Michelangelo Buonarroti, achevée en 1521. L’œuvre se trouve actuellement à gauche du maître-autel de l’église de Santa Maria sopra Minerva à Rome.

Histoire

Ce travail a été commissionné en juin 1514, par le patricien romain Metello Vari. Le contrat stipulait seulement que le personnage soit debout, nu et tenant la Croix dans ses bras, la composition étant laissée entièrement à l’initiative Michel-Ange¹.

Vers 1515, Michel-Ange a travaillé sur une première version de cette statue dans son atelier de Macello dei Corvi² mais a abandonné le projet quand il a découvert une veine noire dans le marbre blanc³.

Une nouvelle version a été rapidement mise en chantier (1519 – 1520) respectant les clauses du contrat.

Michel-Ange y travailla à Florence. La touche finale et le transport à Rome ont été confiés à un apprenti, Pietro Urbano, celui-ci ayant endommagé l’œuvre a dû être rapidement remplacé par Federico Frizzi après une suggestion de Sebastiano del Piombo⁴. La première version, bien que brute, a été demandée par Metello Vari et lui fut donnée en janvier 1522, pour la cour de son petit palazzetto près de Santa Maria sopra Minerva, « come suo grandissimo onore, come fosse d’oro »⁵. Ceci est rapporté par Ulisse Aldrovandi en 1556⁶.

Elle y est restée jusqu’en 1556, comme décrit par Ulisse Aldrovandi qui l’a notée dans des lettres de l’époque comme vendue en 1607, après quoi elle a été complètement perdue de vue.

En 2000, Irene Baldriga retrouve la première version, largement remaniée au xvii^e siècle, dans la sacristie de l’église San Vincenzo Martire, à Bassano Romano, près de Viterbe, la veine noire se distingue encore nettement sur la joue gauche du Christ⁷.

Malgré tous ces problèmes, la deuxième version a impressionné les contemporains. Sebastiano del Piombo a déclaré « que les genoux valaient plus que Rome entière»⁸. Le Christ est représenté nu dans une pose. Au cours de la période baroque, une ceinture a été ajoutée à la statue. Une jambe est fléchie et la tête tournée en arrière, selon le principe de contrapposto.

Une chaussure a été ajoutée au pied droit, afin de le protéger de l’usure provoquée par les dévots baisant le pied.

The Risen Christ, Cristo della Minervain Italian, also known as Christ the Redeemer or Christ Carrying the Cross, is a marble sculpture by the Italy High Renaissance master Michelangelo, finished in 1521. It is in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, to the left of the main altar.

The work was commissioned in June 1514, by the Roman patrician Metello Vari, who stipulated only that the nude standing figure would have the Cross in his arms, but left the composition entirely to Michelangelo.^[1]Michelangelo was working on a first version of this statue in his studio in Macello dei Corvi around 1515, but abandoned it in roughed-out condition when he discovered a black vein in the white marble, remarked upon by Vari in a letter, and later by Ulisse Aldrovandi.^[2] A new version was hurriedly substituted in 1519-1520 to fulfil the terms of the contract. Michelangelo worked on it in Florence, and the move to Rome and final touches were entrusted to an apprentice, Pietro Urbano; the latter, however, damaged the work and had to be quickly replaced by Federico Frizzi at the suggestion of Sebastiano del Piombo.^[3]

The first version, rough as it was, was asked for by Metello Vari, and given him in January 1522, for the little garden courtyard of his palazzetto near Santa Maria sopra Minerva, come suo grandissimo onore, come fosse d’oro translated as « As his greatest honor, as if it were of gold », a mark of the esteem in which Michelangelo was held ». There it remained, described by Aldrovandi in 1556,^[a] and noted in some contemporary letters as apparently for sale in 1607, following which it was utterly lost to sight. In 2000 Irene Baldriga recognized the lost first version, finished in the early seventeenth century, in the sacristy of the church of San Vincenzo Martire, at Bassano Romano near Viterbo; the black vein is clearly distinguishable on Christ’s left cheek.^[2] It is now often called the Giustiniani Christ. The parts finished later are the « right hand, parts of the face and the back ».^[4]:51

Despite all these problems, the second version impressed the contemporaries. Sebastiano del Piombo declared that the knees alone were worthy of more than the whole Rome, which William Wallace has called « one of the most curious praises ever sung about a work of art »^[5] Christ is shown by Michelangelo unclothed in a standing pose. Christ’s sexual organs are exposed in order to show that his sexuality is uncorrupted by lust and completely controlled by his will, so that in his resurrected body he shows his triumph over both sin and death.^[6] During the Baroque period a bronze floating loincloth was added.

A leg is flexed and the head turned back, according to the principle of contrapposto. Compared to the first version, the more active pose allows more varied impressions when the statue is seen from different angles, « not only activating the space around him, but also suggesting an unfolding story ». The first version was exhibited in the National Gallery, London in 2017, in the same room as a cast of the second version, drawings for it, and letter relating to it.^[4]:49–55
