The lower basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi is one of the two structures that make up the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi, together with the upper basilica. Equipped with a crypt (containing the remains of the saint and his closest confreres) and beautifully frescoed by some of the greatest Italian artists of the fourteenth century, it is accessed from the lower square of San Francesco, through a portal that leads to of the slope of the hill, on the left side of the nave.
